The modern CL-Class appeared in September 2006. The design of the new car diverged even further from the S-Class W221 family; externally, some elements were borrowed from history, for example, in the lines of the radiator grille one can see the influence of the C126. The model lineup is almost the same as the C215: CL500 (CL550 in the USA), CL600 and CL65 AMG, except for the CL55 AMG, which was replaced by the CL63 AMG model.

In 2010, the car underwent a facelift. The shape of the bumpers and radiator grille changed, LEDs appeared in the headlights, the taillights became completely red, and the reversing lights were positioned on the sides of the license plate. The naturally aspirated 5.5-liter V8 from the CL 500 gave way to a new 4.6-liter twin-turbocharged unit developing 435 hp and 700 Nm.
