SpeedBreaker runs the Xbox 360 version of Most Wanted natively — recompilation, not emulation

Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2005) is back on the road: the fan project SpeedBreaker is bringing the classic to modern hardware — with graphics up to 4K, frame rates up to 60 FPS, and Steam Deck support. This is not a mod for the PC version and not an emulator, but a full recompilation of the Xbox 360 release. That said, you still need your own copy of the game.

The fan project SpeedBreaker is once again bringing Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2005) to modern devices. Instead of emulating the Xbox 360 edition, the authors used static recompilation: the console game's code is translated in advance into native C++ and built for the target platform, so no emulator is involved in the chain at all. The result is the classic at resolutions up to 4K and frame rates up to 60 frames per second.

What you get

  • Visuals: internal rendering up to 3840×2160 — three times the console's 720p on each side. Ultrawide without stretching: on wide screens you see more road, on 4:3 screens — more picture at the top and bottom.
  • Frames: the game holds its 60 FPS and adapts to the display; if desired, you can lock a stable 30. Refresh rates above 60 are still being explored.
  • Platforms: Steam Deck (OLED), Steam Machine, Steam Frame, Linux and Mac on Apple Silicon. On iPhone and iPad you'll have to build it yourself. Versions for Windows and Android are still in development.
  • Controls: gamepads connect as an Xbox 360 controller, including vibration; keyboard is supported too.

You need your own copy

SpeedBreaker does not ship with game files. Installation requires a disc image of your own copy of the American release of Most Wanted for Xbox 360 — the installer will verify all files and let you know if the version is not supported. You can download the recompilation itself for free on GitHub, where you'll also find instructions for each platform.

Next up — Carbon

The project's author Alex Ugarte (the project(u) team) isn't stopping there: a similar recompilation of Need for Speed: Carbon is on the way, though no dates have been announced yet. Asked why the project is needed when a modded PC version exists, the developer answers briefly: “The PC version imitates the 360 version, while SpeedBreaker is the 360 version.”
