Yamauchi: Gran Turismo 7 is selling better than expected — Polyphony is preparing Spec 4

Gran Turismo 7 is approaching its fifth anniversary, and its sales show no sign of slowing down — Polyphony Digital did not expect such consistency. Kazunori Yamauchi explained to Traxion why the studio is not winding down support, and spoke about the upcoming Spec 4 update.

Sales Hold Their Ground

Even years after launch, Gran Turismo 7 continues to sell in very strong numbers — Polyphony Digital did not anticipate such momentum. Series creator Kazunori Yamauchi told the publication Traxion about this. According to him, steady demand is also pushing the studio to keep going: work on new content and modes continues.

“Gran Turismo 7 is still selling very well. Initially, we didn’t even count on such momentum,” GameMAG quotes him as saying.

More Than Two Million Every Month

Earlier, Yamauchi had already noted that the game’s average monthly active audience consistently exceeds 2 million people and is gradually growing. Neither the studio itself nor Sony Interactive Entertainment had observed such long-lasting interest in the series years after release.

There is another detail: Gran Turismo 7 has never been included in the PlayStation Plus subscription. New players are coming in without free giveaways — although the project periodically takes part in sales in the PlayStation Store.

What’s Next: Spec 4

The main event in its support will be the Spec 4 update. Its first part is promised for October 15 — it will add six cars and the Japanese Sportsland Sugo track. The second batch of content is being prepared for December: according to iXBT.games, it will include the Autumn Ring track, new cars, and features.

Gran Turismo 7 was released on March 4, 2022, on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and in 2027 the entire series will celebrate its 30th anniversary.
