NFS: Carbon comes to the browser — with online races for up to 8 players

Classic Need for Speed: Carbon has received a browser version from the community: graphics maxed out, widescreen support and a high frame rate. The project comes from the same enthusiasts who previously made web ports of Underground 2 and Most Wanted (2005).
Another installment of the classic series once again opens directly in a browser window. Need for Speed: Carbon has received a fan-made web version, and this is not a technical demo lasting a couple of minutes: a full-fledged online mode is promised. It is made by the same team that previously released browser versions of Underground 2 and Most Wanted (2005).
Technical side
The project is built on WebAssembly and WebGPU. This stack makes it possible to rely entirely on the browser while still delivering a decent picture: graphics settings are maxed out, and there is support for widescreen monitors and high frame rates. Progress is stored locally, and you can make a backup copy of your saves yourself.
Races with live opponents
- Lobby size: according to the FAQ, up to eight people can take part in a single race.
- Online: when the project was being tested, the counter on its site showed around 161 players online at the same time.
- Saves: local, with the option to export a backup copy.
Unofficial status
The developers do not hide that this is an amateur effort. The project calls itself fan-made and emphasizes that it is not affiliated with Electronic Arts; it has not received approval from the publisher. The portal's home page is nfscrb.xyz.
