Le Mans Ultimate Restricts Third-Party Trackers: Request Limits and IP Blocks

image
Motorsport Games has introduced automatic request rate limiting and IP blocking for requests it considers outside normal use. The move was prompted by third-party services collecting racing statistics for Le Mans Ultimate players. At the same time, the studio confirmed that fan-made career modes and broadcast tools are not covered by the new measures.

What exactly changed

The publisher of Le Mans Ultimate has started automatically throttling overly active requests to its servers and, in some cases, blocking the addresses they come from. Formally, the reason cited is requests that exceed normal load. In practice, the measure targets third-party sites that collect data on players' races.

Why the community needed trackers

After authorization via Steam, such services showed the history of past races, as well as how the safety rating (SR) and driver rating (DR) changed. RaceControl itself does not currently provide such a summary, so the audience's interest is understandable. The problem is elsewhere: some projects took data without the knowledge and consent of account owners, and drivers' personal statistics ended up available to anyone.

Risks for players and infrastructure

A separate difficulty is the use of someone else's authorization. Having gained access via Steam or a game token, a third-party service acts on behalf of a real person and requests data in thousands of consecutive calls. To the system, this looks like suspicious activity, so the account owner may feel the consequences — up to an erroneous block.

In addition, such activity adds up to millions of calls, which Motorsport Games has to pay for, and a sharp increase in load can destabilize RaceControl for all drivers at once.

The studio's position

The game has no public API, and the studio is not ready to support one right now: Motorsport Games acknowledges the community's desire but notes that such an interface is currently beyond its capabilities. Creators and users of trackers are asked to abandon them and to choose third-party applications more carefully. According to the studio, such services violate the user agreement and privacy policy, and the reason for the restrictions is not a fight against initiative but the stability of the game and legal risks.

Who the restrictions do not affect

When the news spread through the community, players also became concerned about other fan projects. Motorsport Games clarified: third-party additions, including community-made career modes and broadcasting tools, are not affected by the new rules.

  • Statistics trackers — the limits and blocks are aimed specifically at them.
  • Community career modes — according to the publisher's confirmation, they work as before.
  • Broadcast tools — also outside the restrictions.
